A Dose of Doctor Dance

Dose 01: Reach up, Reach out, and Roll

Were you born with a sense of rhythm?

Have you ever said, “I’ve got no sense of rhythm”? You might be underestimating yourself. Researchers tested babies who were just two or three days old to discover whether they could detect a beat. While the babies slept, they heard a repeating rhythmic pattern in which an expected beat was occasionally removed. Measurements of their brain activity showed that they noticed when the beat was missing.

Before they could walk, talk or clap along, their brains were already forming expectations about what should come next. This suggests that the basic ability to detect a beat may be present from birth—even though learning to coordinate our movements with it takes much longer.
