Course content

Section 1: Seeing Psychology in Dance

Begin with a practical introduction to Psychology and Dance Psychology. Explore developmental, social, biological and cognitive perspectives and consider how each can reveal something different about dancers and dancing.

Examine four influential mental skills and characteristics. Guided reflections help you connect the ideas with your own training, teaching and performance experiences.

Consider how dancers respond to demands, recover from difficulty and relate to eating behaviours. The emphasis is on awareness, reflection and knowing when issues require appropriately qualified support.

Explore how visualisation and imagery may support practice, how psychological processes interact with pain and injury, and how memory and learning shape skill development.

Place performance anxiety within the broader mental-skills picture. Reflect on how it can affect thoughts, feelings, bodily responses and performance.

Consider the protective role of support networks, the psychological demands of career management and how realistic optimism can influence development and persistence.

Bring the 13 mental skills together, identify the ideas most relevant to your practice and complete the end-of-course multiple-choice quiz.

Description

Mental skills sit at the heart of how dancers learn, practise, perform and navigate the demands of a dance life. They include familiar topics such as motivation and performance anxiety, but also broader influences including self-esteem, resilience, imagery, support networks and career management.

This five-hour, self-paced course provides an accessible introduction to Dance Psychology and explores 13 mental skills relevant to dancers. The course first introduces four broad areas of psychology – developmental, social, biological and cognitive – before applying psychological thinking to dance.

Short video lectures are interleaved with Pause & Reflect Activities, an Active Learning Exercise, suggested reading and Dance Breaks. Rather than offering a single formula for success, the course invites you to notice individual differences and consider how different skills may become more or less important at different times.

By the end of the course, you will have a broader psychological vocabulary for understanding dance practice and a structured way to reflect on strengths, challenges and sources of support. Successful completion of the final quiz leads to a five-hour CPD Certificate of Completion.

Who is the course for?

  • Dancers in training who want to understand the psychological side of their development.
  • Professional and independent dancers reflecting on performance, wellbeing and career demands.
  • Dance teachers who want a broader framework for understanding and supporting dancers.
  • Dance professionals and performers interested in an accessible introduction to mental skills.
  • Anyone curious about the many psychological factors involved in learning and performing dance.
